The Segway Personal Transporter (Segway PT, formerly HT for Human Transporter) is an electrically driven one-person vehicle with only two wheels on the same axle, between which the person being transported stands, and which balances itself through electronic drive control. It has been manufactured since December 2001 by Segway Inc. of Bedford, New Hampshire. Following patent litigation, Chinese competitor NINEBOT bought SEGWAY in April 2015 with the help of venture capitalists. A Segway costs, depending on the model, between € 2,000 and € 10,000.
The Mobility Aid Ordinance (MobHV) specifies what to look for when using Segway and similar vehicles. According to § 3 MobHV, the driver must at least be entitled to drive a moped – this also means that the minimum age is 15 years. So you need a driver’s license for a Segway to drive a moped. This permission is usually included in a car driver’s license. Caution: The assumption is that drivers born before April 1, 1965, do not need a moped driver’s license. Even providers of Segway tours often advertise with this information. What is correct for the moped, but does not apply if you want to drive Segway. This is always a driving license needed.
